Koperslager
Het is niet toevallig dat Ko Zuidweg saxofoonmondstukken is gaan maken en refacen. Ko speelt al jaren saxofoon maar koos voor een bestaan als ‘koperslager’. Met zijn broer Rinus zet hij (als vijfde generatie Zuidweg!) de smederij van het bijzondere familiebedrijf in Zeeland voort. Metaal bewerken zit in zijn DNA.

  

Coppersmith
It is no coincidence Ko Zuidweg started making and refacing saxophone mouthpieces. Ko has been playing the saxophone for years, but chose to follow a career as a coppersmith. With his brother Rinus he continued the family business in a smithy in Zeeland (in the south of the Netherlands). Metalworking is in his DNA.

Saxofonist
Ko begon op 15-jarige leeftijd op altsaxofoon en ging daarna tenorsax spelen. Dat deed hij op zo’n heftige manier, in de stijl van de vroegere honkers en shouters, dat hij de bijnaam ‘Het Beest van Zeeland’ kreeg. Later ging hij ook sopraan- en baritonsax spelen, geïnspireerd door o.a. Ronnie Cuber, Harry Carney en Gerry Mulligan.		  

Saxophonist
At the age of 15, Ko started playing the alto sax. Soon he switched to the tenor saxophone. He played the tenor sax in such a rocking way (following the style of the legendary honkers and shouters), his fellow musicians nicknamed him ‘The Beast of Zeeland’. Later on, Ko started playing soprano and baritone saxophone as well, inspired by - among others - Ronnie Cuber, Harry Carney and Gerry Mulligan.
     
     
     
Hans Dulfer
Het was de beroemde tenorsaxofonist Hans Dulfer die veroorzaakte dat Ko de wereld van de saxofoonmondstukken zou inrollen. Het leek Dulfer 'logisch' dat Ko zijn oude, versleten Otto Link zou kunnen restaureren omdat Ko immers metaalbewerker was én saxofoon speelde! Die restauratie slaagde zo goed, dat Ko zich steeds meer ging verdiepen in de technische aspecten van saxofoonmondstukken. Dit was het begin van een nieuw hoofdstuk in zijn leven, waarbij zijn vakmanschap als koperslager en zijn passie voor de saxofoon op een geweldige manier samenkwamen.		  

Hans Dulfer
It was the world famous Dutch tenor saxophonist Hans Dulfer who encouraged Ko to step into the world of saxophone mouthpieces. To Dulfer, it seemed quite obvious that Ko was the right person to repair his old, worn Otto Link. After all, Ko was a metalworker as well as a saxophonist! The restauration was very succesful and from that moment on, there was no turning back. Ko started studying the technical aspects of saxophone mouthpiece design thoroughly. This was the beginning of a new chapter in his life in which he was able to combine his craftsmanship as a coppersmith with his passion for the saxophone.
     
     
     
Lost Wax methode
Via de ‘lost wax’ methode, waarbij van een bestaand mondstuk grove afgietsels worden gemaakt, maakte Ko met de hand het ene na het andere mondstuk en experimenteerde met verschillende kamers, baanlengtes, baancurves, baffelvormen, raildiktes en tipopeningen. In het begin waren dit vooral afgietsels van metalen Otto Links. Inmiddels kan Ko van ieder mondstuk uitgaan en deze naar ieders wens modificeren.		   Lost Wax method
 Using the ‘Lost Wax’ method - a process of making rough duplicates of an existing mouthpiece - Ko created many mouthpieces and experimented with different chamber sizes, facing lengths, facing curves, baffle shapes, rail thicknesses and tip openings. In the beginning, he used merely Otto Link based mouthpieces, but nowadays the initial shape of the mouthpiece can be derived from any brand and type of mouthpiece.
     
     
     
Knock Out mondstukken
Ko brengt zijn mondstukken op de markt onder de naam 'Knock Out' mouthpieces. Vele saxofonisten vonden al de weg naar het atelier in Heinkenszand waar uiteenlopende Knock Out-mondstukken in alle rust uitgetest kunnen worden. Zie de Artists-pagina.		  

Knock Out mouthpieces
Ko's mouthpieces are marketed as Knock Out mouthpieces. Many saxophonists already visited Ko's workshop in Heinkenszand (The Netherlands). There, all kinds of Knock Out mouthpieces can be tested in a pleasant atmosphere. See the Artists-page.
     
     
     
In zijn vrije tijd speelt Ko met veel plezier in The New Orpheans bigband (bariton en tenor), in het Saxofoon kwintet Meet 5 Reed (bariton), in Smelly Kitchen (bariton en tenor) en in het JB Orchestra (bariton).  

In his spare time, Ko enjoys playing in The New Orpheans bigband (baritone and tenor), in the Saxophone quintet Meet 5 Reed (baritone), in Smelly Kitchen (baritone and tenor) and in the JB Orchestra (baritone).
